Paul Graham has a short post on design philosophy (probably from around 2008).

Design Philosophy

The assertion is that you don’t design for the average user, you design for performance. That’s how you get timeless design.

This is part of his series of posts on Arc, the new Lisp-like language he and others have been working on for the past 10 years or so.

This is pretty cool:

pdf2htmlEX on GitHub.

It’s largely for text-oriented documents, but seems to have the position-dependent part of PDF down pat. His page has a fairly wide range of examples. I expect the target market is for scientific papers, which it seems to have nailed quite well.
